Sambuca is a anise flavored liqueur named after the elderbush (Latin name: Sambucus), its original flavoring ingredient. Sambuca is strong and semisweet, and is usually served with a couple of coffee beans floating on top and flamed.
Its most common variety is often referred to as white sambuca to differentiate it from other varieties that are deep blue in colour ( black sambuca ). Like other anise-flavoured liqueurs, the ouzo effect is sometimes observed when combined with water.
